Horizontal area of GIS-t

Description

“Everything that happens, happens in space” is a catchphrase that illustrates the importance of location data and location services. Also currently very current platforms such as e.g. Uber and Airbnb are also successful because of the location services on which they are based. If in the past GIS technology was reserved for specialists in this field, today such solutions have become an integral part of almost all information systems and solutions. Slovenia can be considered as one of the more developed European countries in the field of spatial data, but we also want to become one of the 10 most advanced countries in terms of the geospatial development index (*). We will achieve this by integrating location services into as many new solutions as possible, which, like the previous ones, will be referenced internationally and we will be able to place them on other markets as well.

Benefits for businesses

By working with the GIS-t horizontal, companies gain knowledge, experience and technologies to use location data and location services to better meet the needs of digital users. The concrete benefits are related to the location component in spatial positioning, spatial analytics, navigation services, web mapping, process management, forecasting future conditions, optimization algorithms, integration of IoT and sensor devices.

Companies can significantly improve the functionality of their own products and services and on this basis update their own processes and the processes of their partners and customers and create new business models. With their above-average products, services and solutions, they offer customers a better experience (Customer eXperience) and greater added value. In this way, companies raise their visibility in the market, increase sales and ensure lasting competitiveness.

GIS-t incorporates its own value chain from data capture systems and services, specialized data production platforms, integration platforms, to dedicated applications and services.

The value chain provided by GIS-t includes four sets of technologies and solutions:

• data acquisition systems and services (location-assisted sensor systems for measuring environmental parameters, cameras and 3D scanners installed in space or on mobile platforms, use of drones and satellite imagery data),

• specialized platforms for the production of data products (platforms for processing satellite data and 3D aerial images, BIM management platforms, crowdsourcing platforms, monitoring the location of vehicles, moving objects and other sensor data flows),

• integration platforms (merging and connecting information layers obtained from national and local / urban spatial infrastructure, data acquisition systems and specialized platforms, integrated methods of spatial analysis and machine learning, applied OGC standards and EU Inspire directive),

• advanced applications and location services (by integrating dedicated platform services enable the development of integrated applications for specific solutions in the domain areas of verticals within SRIP PMiS and other SRIPs).

We focus on applications for:

• planning - applications intended for preliminary spatial analyzes, forecasts of event developments and space optimizations in the planning phase of interventions

• process management - spatially dependent monitoring of process development, detection of critical conditions and automatic response or decision support

• location services - intended for the delivery of relevant information to individual entities in space (individual, car, robot) for optimal operation in the environment.

How to benefit together

Successful creation of modern digital solutions and business models in individual industries or within individual domains of vertical SRIPs requires in-depth knowledge of the ability to obtain and use location data and services on the one hand and domain knowledge and new ideas of vertical SRIPs on the other.

Horizontal GIS-t is part of the Horizontal ICT Network, whose ambition is to establish a comprehensive ICT platform for smart environments. This will be aimed at different users and will allow access to various data, web services and IoT devices. Advanced HPC and Big data solutions and appropriate cyber security solutions will be implemented. The platform will integrate standard data and services from the national cloud, local and city platforms and will also include the open data and services segment. The ambition of the platform is to be globally competitive and will also be the basis for the market breakthrough of the Slovenian ICT industry in international markets.

By cooperating with the GIS-t horizontal and the ICT horizontal, companies can gain invaluable experience in the field of both the use of location data and the capabilities of comprehensive platforms, thus opening up great opportunities in the planning and development of their ideas.

The specific contributions of the GIS-t to the SRIP PMiS verticals and other SRIPs are listed below:

• PMiS Health: integrated systems for setting up location services (systems for redeploying patients according to available capacities in order to reduce queues) and location-linked process management (ambulance monitoring and time coordination of further procedures);

• PMiS Energy and other supply: use of spatial data and machine learning methods to predict production and energy needs and establish mechanisms in advanced energy infrastructure management, use of spatial and other relevant data in directing investments to free and degraded areas;

• PMiS Mobility, transport and logistics: optimization of traffic flows using sensor infrastructure, smart parking systems with recording of free spaces;

• PMiS Security: connection of municipal and state platforms and use of advanced solutions in the field of remote sensing (geolocated cameras) and automatic or operator-supported recognition of unusual behavior in cases of protection of mass events;

• PMiS Quality of urban living: integration of weather and semantically marked data with simulation of microclimate (winds) to detect the spread of dust particles and selective warning of hazards to vulnerable groups, placement of green areas to reduce the negative effects of urban heating.

• SRIP Smart buildings and home with a wood chain: building design and management with BIM, building navigation systems, location-based services, heating adjustment according to the surrounding weather and weather forecasts, and monitoring of heat losses by remote sensing.

• SRIP Networks for the transition to a circular economy: support for logistics systems with solutions for monitoring capacities and resources and optimizing their management.

• SRIP Sustainable food production: systematic monitoring of field condition, field moisture and plant condition from satellite systems and drones

• SRIP Sustainable tourism: mobile applications for navigation along thematic routes, mobile guides, various cartographic products that specialize in individual end users (including people with special needs).

• SRIP Factories of the Future: indoor positioning and navigation systems, support for industrial processes in process optimization

• SRIP Mobility: systems for capturing data on the environment in which the vehicle is located, their integration with other spatial data, providing spatial analytics to support the automatic decision-making of autonomous vehicles.

Why choose GIS-t

The coherence of global trends and S4 priorities represents an exceptional opportunity for the growth of Slovenian companies in the field of location data and services. Slovenian stakeholders have many advantages in the field of GIS-t, as many niche companies are involved, we have a well-developed spatial platform at the state and municipal level, we have top research and innovation results worldwide, we have established good cooperation between JRO and industry. Slovenia's geographical small size is an advantage in establishing pilot environments, Slovenia is already recognized in the SEE region as a trend leader, and it is also active in European organizations in the field of geographical information.

Slovenian stakeholders have the following many advantages in the field of GIS-t:

• Many niche-oriented companies whose value chain demonstrates a significant advantage over global providers due to their agility and ability to quickly integrate high-tech components.

• Well-developed basic spatial infrastructure, which is in the domain of the state or municipalities.

• Top research and innovation results, led by data acquisition systems (the only EU-produced processor capable of performing remote sensing from space, advanced hyperspectral cameras, call locating from base stations), data processing of ground observations (the most accurate algorithm for object recognition) in 3D data in the world), distribution of ground observation data (ESA award-winning applications), data integration of several national national infrastructures and many developers of advanced applications (vehicle tracking systems, award-winning solar energy forecasting application, multimodal mobility solutions for the blind ,…).

• Well-developed cooperation between the Public Procurement Agency and industry, which is reflected in the direct involvement of companies in research activities, as well as in the joint appearance on the market.

• Geographical small size and diversity make Slovenia one of the most suitable pilot environments for testing a variety of technologies and services.

• Well-developed markets in the region, especially in the areas of South-Eastern and Eastern Europe, where Slovenian stakeholders are the bearers of development and drivers of trends and Slovenia is already positioned as a reference country in this sector.

• Strong integration into international networks, both at the EU level (project management of the umbrella European organization for geographical information EUROGI is in the domain of Slovenian representatives) and cooperation with key development actors in the field of GIS-T.
